She is half French and still got a D. Now predicted an A.

People assumed she would sail through GCSE French because she speaks it at home. She did not. Home French and GCSE French are completely different things and her school never addressed that. Claire got it immediately. Eight lessons in and the written work looked completely different. We do 8 sessions a month and will probably carry on into A level if she picks it.

She wanted to drop Spanish in Year 10. Now predicted an 8.

My daughter came home one afternoon and said she was done with Spanish. Her school agreed it might be the sensible option. I said try one month of outside help first. That was eight months ago. I have no idea what her tutor does in those sessions but she walks out of them cheerful which she never did from school Spanish. Predicted an 8. We do 8 sessions a month which suits her pace.

My son is not a linguist. Junior Cert French is now a merit.

He finds languages hard and always has. Isabelle was the first tutor who did not just throw more vocabulary at him. She changed how he approached the reading and listening comprehension papers. Seven months later he got a merit in his mock. His attitude to the subject has changed too which matters more to me than the grade.

Full marks on the French oral. I sat in the car and cried.

We went to 16 sessions a month for the last six months because the oral was a real problem. Not nerves exactly, more like a complete shutdown when she had to speak. Her tutor just kept doing mock orals every session until it felt normal. On exam day she rang me after and said it felt fine. Full marks. I sat in the car and cried for about ten minutes.

French and Spanish at the same time. Both went up two grades.

We do 16 sessions a month split between the two languages. I was sceptical about whether that was too much but it has genuinely worked. French up two grades. Spanish up two grades. My daughter said having two different tutors actually helped because the styles are different and she had to adapt. That felt like an unexpected bonus.

Arabic GCSE, brilliant tutor, hard language to find support for

Really hard to find good Arabic tutors in the UK and Daresne came through. Tutor was brilliant and understood the specific requirements of the GCSE syllabus. Daughter improved massively in written Arabic and reading comprehension. We will use Daresne for A level Arabic next year as well.

Latin GCSE, the grammar finally started making sense

Son chose GCSE Latin and was really struggling with the grammar and unseen translation. His tutor went back to basics with the declensions and verb patterns and built things back up from there. He is predicted a 7 having been getting 4s. Really glad we found the right tutor for it.

GCSE Italian, daughter went from a 4 to a 7

Italian GCSE is not commonly supported and her school has limited resources for it. Her Daresne tutor focused entirely on the exam components that were dragging her down — written and reading comprehension. She went from a 4 to a predicted 7 over about six months. The grade jump speaks for itself.
